It is also used to purify sugar from other sources, such as maple or sorghum, although these are produced in much smaller quantities. Hydrated lime commonly added to raw cane juice which has low pH and dissolved impurities. Between five and ten pounds of lime is required. Basically, each ton of cane sugar production will need 5 to 10 pounds of lime in process while sugar production from sugar beets require approximately one quarter ton for each ton of beet sugar. Then, the process is repeated as required based on the purity of final product.
