The largest user of lime in the world is steel manufacturing.
It is used as a flux to purify steel in the traditional basic oxygen furnace (BOF) and the newer technology of electric arc furnace (EAF). The lime usage per ton of steel ingot is around 150lb/ton for BOF while 85lb/ton for EAF. Quicklime is commonly used to remove impurities such as phosphorus, silica, sulphur and manganese. In addition, lime is used in refinery processes such as the adjustment of steel temperature or prevention of reabsorption of impurities from slags. With the use of a good quality calcined lime, it is promising to reduce the lime usage in the converter and thus to have better mechanism of slag and temperatures in the converter. It also assists in increasing the yield of the liquid steel in the converter.
