Steel Mill
Our high-quality quicklime serves as a key ingredient in the production of steel. Several examples to highlight the importance of quicklime in steel production include:
Desulfurization
Sulfur is a common impurity in steel that can cause a variety of quality problems, including brittleness, reduced strength, and corrosion. Quicklime is a highly effective desulfurizing agent for steel, as it reacts readily with sulfur to form calcium sulfide. Calcium sulfide is a solid that floats to the top of the molten steel and can be easily removed.
Impurity Removal
Quicklime can also be used to control other impurities during steel production. Impurities such as phosphorus, silica and carbon can cause problems such as brittleness, reduced ductility and toughness, and increased risk of cracking during forging. Quicklime can be used to remove these impurities through the formation of calcium phosphate, calcium silicate and calcium carbide which are more easily separated from the final product.
Slag Formation
Slag is a byproduct of the steelmaking process that is formed when impurities in the steel react with the fluxes (such as quicklime) that are added to the molten metal. Slag formation is important as it helps to remove impurities from the steel. Slag formation also helps to maintain the temperature of the molten steel by providing a thermal blanket on the surface of the liquid. This helps to prevent heat loss and maintain the optimal temperature for the steelmaking process.
